I Gave Up on Climbing Mount Fuji This Year…

camp

Unfortunately, I had to reschedule my Fuji climb due to bad weather caused by Typhoon Shanshan (Typhoon No. 10).

I had prepared everything I needed (refer to the previous article), but it couldn’t be helped. It was for my safety.

In this article, I will talk about how I canceled my reservation at the yamagoya (a mountain hut).

Calling the Yamagoya to Ask About the Situation

The mountain hut I had booked asked me to cancel my reservation through their website if I wanted to.

They also mentioned that there was a high possibility the cancellation fee would be waived since the reason for the cancellation was bad weather (I called 3 days before the reservation).

The staff at the yamagoya were still waiting for an official decision from Yamanashi Prefecture. If the weather was deemed too dangerous for climbing, the local government would issue an alert, and in that case, my cancellation fee would be waived.

I sent an email requesting the cancellation of my reservation and waited for their response.

The next day (2 days before my reservation), they accepted my cancellation without charge.

Cancellation Due to Personal Circumstances

Please note that a cancellation fee applies if you cancel your reservation for personal reasons.

In my case, Typhoon No. 10 was approaching, so the Yamagoya decided to waive my cancellation fee.

Next Attempt

I will definitely attempt to climb Mount Fuji next year. I’ve already bought various gear like trekking poles, suitable clothing, and gaiters.

Trying other mountains in autumn sounds like a good idea, too.

Mount Fuji is only open for tourists for about two months (July and August), which is quite short.

Well, the mountain is actually open during the winter, but climbing in the cold season is not recommended due to heavy snow.

I hope I can climb Mount Fuji next year…
